For many years, Unitarian Universalist congregations have acknowledged a turning point in the growth and self-identity of teenagers with Coming of Age (COA) programs. Generally lasting one year, many congregations’ programs have involved trips, retreats, worship services, community service and mentored learning. By involving youth in activities and reflections that encourage the expansion of thinking, feeling, and action, COA enables youth to grow in maturity, responsibility and spiritual depth. Coming of Age programs involves a deeper acknowledgement, on the part of the youth, parents, mentors and the congregation, that the youth are coming into their own as Unitarian Universalists. Unitarian Universalism is more solidly becoming “their religion” and not just the religion of their parents or guardians.

Our six youth and mentors every month will be attending one discussion group (topics vary from UUism to relationships), one fun event (such as paintball and swimming), attending church, and meeting with their mentors. They will also be deciding as a group on a community service project which may be church related.

The Coming of Age had a “kick off” church sleepover in June. They spent time getting to know each other and the mentors, made dinner, learned about putting together a worship service, played games and had a fun time!

The swim party in August will include a brief planning meeting and then fun in the water with their mentors!

The Youth prepared and enjoyed a delicious dinner at the kick-off Coming of Age sleepover at church.
