September 11 -- Ingathering

Ingathering Celebration and Water Ceremony             Rev.  Dr.  Paul Hull

We are celebrating our ingathering at the start of another church year.  Bring a small container of water from a place that has significance for you.  We will combine all the waters symbolic of ingathering all our experiences into church community. Rev.  Hull will speak of the importance of religious community as supporting our higher hopes, better aspirations, and enjoyment of living in a homily titled “For the Celebration of Life.”

Please plan to attend our annual ingathering picnic following the service.

“The Evangelical UU” and Teacher Dedication.   Rev.  Dr.  Paul Hull and Kavita Vansant, Acting Director of Religious Education

“Evangelical” is derived from the Greek word “euangelion” meaning “good news.” We will explore what is our UU good news this morning. Some of our best good news at HUP is our religious education program where we educate our children and youth about religion rather than indoctrinate children and youth in a particular religious dogma.  This Sunday, we will honor and dedicate our religious education teachers as part of sharing our good news.

FLOWERS:  Given by William and Nancy Gannett in memory of Nancy Carroll Draper

GREETERS:   William and Nancy Gannett

USHERS:  Richard & Sharyn Johnson

SERMON:  “Moving the Planet Toward Sustainability”       Rev. Dr.  Paul Hull

Saturday, September 24 is the third global initiative organized by 350.org to draw attention for the need for climate change action.  The theme of this year’s 350.org events is “Moving Planet.”  Rev. Hull, who had a long career in environmental science and engineering before entering the UU ministry, will speak of the need to create a sustainable future through changing our communities.  He will explore the transition community movement—a global initiative to make communities sustainable and reduce our dependency on fossil fuels.  Rev. Hull will ask the question “Why not here?”

“I Care about Your Soul”                                                 Rev. Dr. Paul Hull

This Sunday we will recognize our Coming of Age program—a program that matches youth with adult mentors as a way of nurturing the spiritual growth of our youth.  Rev.  Hull will explore our cultural need for mentors and ritual elders to help our youth to lead creative and spiritual lives.  We need ritual elders and mentors who care deeply about the souls of our youth.  Can you think of someone who mentored you and lifted your life at a crucial time?
